Catching up with European AmChams at the Brussels Briefing

On Tuesday, 21 March, AmCham EU hosted its annual Brussels Briefing with 25 representatives from 15 AmChams in Europe in attendance. The Brussels Briefing is an approach to inform colleagues about the latest developments in EU policy, to exchange advocacy best practices and to network. This year's programme began with advocacy workshops focusing on digital and healthcare issues. The day also saw sessions on transatlantic cooperation, EMPOWER HER, the attractiveness of Europe and an inside look at the stories driving the agenda in Brussels.

The Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CS3D) is a positive step toward promoting responsible business practices, but, some changes are still necessary. Maximum harmonisation across Member States will protect the integrity of the Single Market and ease burdens on businesses operating across the EU. We have outlined what needs to happen in a joint letter, signed together with twelve other European associations.

Transatlantic 2023: in review

This year’s Transatlantic Conference, ‘Thriving together: uniting in the face of global challenges’ put industry and institutions in the same room to discuss the importance of a strong and united transatlantic relationship, especially on the green and digital transitions. The conference took place on Wednesday, 22 March 2023 and featured speakers from both sides of the Atlantic. As an opening video, Gina Raimondo, US Secretary of Commerce, underlined the importance of keeping the transatlantic dialogue open through forums like the Trade and Technology Council. Michael Miebach, CEO, Mastercard, then expanded on why the focus should be on innovation, sustainability and inclusion to keep the EU and US competitive.  

Launch of The Transatlantic Economy 2023

The Transatlantic Economy 2023 presents the most up-to-date facts and figures about the economic relationship between Europe and the United States. The research was conducted independently by Daniel Hamilton and Joseph Quinlan at the Foreign Policy Institute, School of Advanced International Studies, Johns Hopkins University and the Transatlantic Leadership Network. This edition features new insights into the impact of the war in Ukraine, international sanctions on Russia, transatlantic energy transformations, the reconfiguration of global supply chains with ‘derisking’ strategies, relations with China as well as the green and digital transitions. It also includes individual profiles for 30+ European countries, with Ukraine surveyed for the first time, and all 50 US states. This year marks the 20th edition of The Transatlantic Economy, the annual survey of transatlantic jobs, trade and investment.

Discussing the EU's digital economy in Strasbourg

From Monday, 13 March to Wednesday, 15 March, an AmCham EU delegation visited the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France. The trip centered around meetings with a total of 14 MEPs representing the five main political groups. The delegates voiced their concerns on the AI Act and Data Act, and offered solutions based on industry input. Making sure definitions are clear and avoiding legal fragmentation are the way forward for both acts.  

Diving deep on finance in Frankfurt and Strasbourg

On Monday, 13 March an AmCham EU delegation travelled to Frankfurt, Germany to meet with the European Central Bank, European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority and International Sustainability Standards Board. On Tuesday, 14 March the delegation then travelled to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France to meet with 11 MEPs. The delegation focused on the Capital Markets Union package, Banking package, Instant Payments and the implementation of Digital Operational Resilience Act. The proper implementation of these acts is crucial for securing a level-playing field and avoiding legal fragmentation in financial services.

Discussing chemicals legislation in Helsinki and Warsaw

From Monday, 6 March to Tuesday, 7 March, an AmCham EU delegation met with the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) in Helsinki, Finland. The delegates spoke with Dr Sharon McGuinness, Executive Director, ECHA and Frank Buchler, Head of Unit, ECHA, to discuss the EU Green Deal and the EU's chemicals strategy. The delegation then traveled to Warsaw, Poland on Wednesday, 8 March, to meet with the Ministry of Development and Technology and the Ministry of Health. The trips led to a fruitful exchange on the challenges faced by both industry and the Member States around the EU's chemicals legislation.

On Wednesday, 8 March, AmCham EU participated in a hearing session on the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) at the European Parliament. The session, organised by Beatrice Covassi, MEP (S&D, IT), was opened by Lorena Boix Alonso, Director, Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology, European Commission. Lucia López Carasa, Policy Adviser, AmCham EU highlighted the need for industry input in clarifying the scope and reporting obligations of the CRA. AmCham EU Board hosts Polish Ambassador

On Friday, 10 March, AmCham EU’s Board of Directors welcomed Ambassador Andrzej Sadoś, Permanent Representative of Poland to the European Union for a seated lunch. The discussions covered a range of issues that will be central to the upcoming Polish Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2025 and the need to continue to strengthen the transatlantic relationship.
