Single Market Strategy: a stronger internal market must remain open to global investment

The Single Market Strategy’s plan to introduce broad ‘European preference’ criteria into public procurement risks undermining the openness that has made Europe competitive and attractive to global partners. A thriving Single Market remains the number one driver of foreign investment into Europe, and the new Strategy promises a range of measures to unlock its full potential, making it simpler to do business across the EU. Tackling the ‘Terrible Ten’ market barriers and embracing digital tools, for example, are long overdue.  

Discussing regulatory simplicity and legal certainty with Commissioner McGrath

On Tuesday, 20 May, AmCham EU met with Michael McGrath, European Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, the Rule of Law and Consumer Protection. The meeting served as an introduction to AmCham EU’s work and an opportunity to hear more about the Commissioner’s current priorities. AmCham EU underlined the importance of legal certainty, proportionality and alignment across upcoming legislation. We also shared updates on our engagement with the Commission on key sustainability, digital and consumer protection files, including outreach to international partners.  

Deepening transatlantic cooperation in DC

From Tuesday, 13 to Friday, 16 May, AmCham EU joined the AmChams in Europe network for a delegation visit to Washington, DC. The group met with representatives from the US Department of State, US Department of Commerce and Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) to discuss trade, investment and the broader transatlantic relationship. A highlight of the visit was the US launch of the Transatlantic Economy 2025 study, alongside AmCham EU’s counterparts at the US Chamber of Commerce. The report presents the latest data on the EU-US economic relationship.
