Championing sustainable finance in Paris and Strasbourg

On Monday, 5 May an AmCham EU delegation travelled to Paris, France to meet with the Bank of France, French Directorate-General of the Treasury, the European Securities Markets Authority and the French Treasury. Afterwards, on Tuesday, 6 and Wednesday, 7 May, the delegation travelled to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France to meet with MEPs. The delegation focused on advancing the transatlantic regulatory dialogue, promoting the competitiveness of Europe’s financial sector, supporting the simplification agenda and highlighting the private sector’s role in driving sustainable finance, digital innovation and long-term investment in Europe. 

Strengthening environmental ties in Finland

From Monday, 12 to Tuesday, 13 May 2025, AmCham EU visited Helsinki, Finland to meet with AmCham Finland, the European Chemicals Agency, the Finnish Chamber of Commerce, the Finnish Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Finnish Ministry of Environment. During the visit, the delegates emphasised the importance of advancing regulatory simplification and supporting innovation across industries. The discussions focused on ongoing files including the REACH Revision, the implementation of the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, the simplification of the Classification, Labelling and Packaging Regulation and the upcoming EU water resilience strategy. Throughout the meetings, participants reinforced the need for a balanced and science-based approach to environmental legislation to support Europe’s green transition and industrial competitiveness.

How the Critical Medicines Act will strengthen Europe’s life sciences sector

On Wednesday, 30 April, Thibaut L'Ortye, Senior Director of Public Affairs, AmCham EU, joined a panel discussion on the Critical Medicines Act (CMA). Hosted by the European Policy Centre, Mr L'Ortye underlined the need for open and resilient supply chains to ensure continued access to medicines. He also highlighted the CMA’s potential to strengthen Europe's competitiveness and improve patient access. Avoiding protectionist measures and aligning the CMA with the EU’s wider simplification efforts is essential to attract investment into the Single Market. The discussion highlighted the importance of public-private collaboration to build a more competitive life sciences sector in the EU. 

Shining light on Spain’s solar energy

Spain is leading the way in solar power across Europe, with more utility-scale capacity installed and in development than any other EU country. Building on this foundation, Cisco signed a 15-year agreement in 2024 with Spanish renewable energy provider IGNIS to purchase 60,000 MWh of solar energy annually. The agreement supports the construction of a new solar plant in Aragón and is expected to supply enough energy to match 100% of Cisco’s electricity needs in Europe while adding 20,000 MWh to the national grid. This partnership supports Cisco’s net-zero ambitions, drives local job creation and reinforces Spain’s clean energy and digital transformation efforts. Learn more on Invested in Europe. 

Highlighting the need for predictable investment policies

On Tuesday, 29 April, Andrew Hill, Senior Policy Adviser, AmCham EU represented the organisation at CompLaw's Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Regimes & Foreign Subsidies Regulation conference. Joining the panel on the EU foreign direct investment screening mechanism, Mr Hill stressed the need to align FDI screening frameworks across borders and to ensure that FDI screening is focused on transactions with clear national security concerns. He also underlined the importance of predictability for businesses operating in the Single Market. The Foreign Investment Screening Regulation, if designed correctly, could make a significant impact in safeguarding security while preserving Europe's openness to global investment.

Securing innovation: IP's role in Europe's future

Answering the big questions with Euronews

That is the big question being asked by businesses on both sides of the Atlantic. Malte Lohan, CEO of AmCham EU, joined The Big Question on Euronews with Angela Barnes, Managing Editor, Euronews Business to highlight how the EU-US relationship remains the most integrated economic partnership in the world, representing over €8 trillion in commercial ties. During the interview, Mr Lohan warned that any reintroduction of tariffs would have serious repercussions for businesses, introducing uncertainty around investment and disrupting supply chains. Making waves for sustainability

Plastic pollution remains a major concern for European beaches, with 481 plastic items found per 100 metres in 2022. The Beach Care Project, led by CNH’s CASE Construction Equipment and its Sustainable Development Initiatives division, tackles this challenge through community cleanups, scientific research and environmental education. Active in France, Italy, Spain, the UK and the Ivory Coast, the programme engages local communities in restoring coastal ecosystems. With 6,500 participants to date, the initiative recycles collected waste into educational tools, fostering a culture of sustainability. Bridging the digital divide

Women hold just 22% of technology roles in European companies, and fewer than one in five women believe the tech ecosystem is fair. To help close these gaps, HP is working through programmes such as HP LIFE and the Digital Equity Accelerator to support historically underrepresented groups, particularly women, youth and rural communities, by providing access to digital skills, education and economic opportunities. Meeting with Commissioner Šuica on Europe's competitiveness

On Tuesday, 15 April, Liam Benham (Boeing), Chair, and Malte Lohan, CEO, AmCham EU met with Dubravka Šuica, European Commissioner for the Mediterranean. The meeting focused on how to enhance Europe’s competitiveness in a rapidly evolving global landscape. Discussions also covered the Mediterranean region, ahead of the upcoming Mediterranean Pact expected in early autumn. Participants emphasised the value of partnership and investment in the region, underlining its role for Europe’s future and how the transatlantic relationship will be vital in supporting the plan. AmCham EU remains committed to working with EU partners to ensure Europe continues to be a competitive and attractive place to invest. 

Engaging with the EU’s three Presidents

Amidst trade tensions and global uncertainty, senior business leaders from AmCham EU’s Executive Council engaged with Presidents António Costa, Roberta Metsola and Ursula von der Leyen of the European Council, Parliament and Commission. Furnacing the future

With up to a fifth of the EU’s building CO2 emissions coming from their construction, renovation, deconstruction, demolition and wider supply chain, Owens Corning is responding by investing in more sustainable technologies at its Paroc Hällekis insulation plant in Sweden. The company has launched a multi-year project to replace two coke-fired cupola furnaces with an electric melting furnace, which could reduce the plant’s Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 80%. Supported by the Swedish Energy Agency’s Industrial Leap programme, the initiative enhances Owens Corning’s sustainability credentials, builds employees' skillsets and aligns with its 2030 climate goals. Reciprocal tariffs: AmCham EU urges de-escalation in tit-for-tat dispute

The US administration announced the imposition of a 20% tariff on most imports from the EU. In response, the EU indicated it is preparing for further countermeasures if no negotiated solution is found. AmCham EU is concerned that these measures will create damaging ripple effects across all sectors of the economy. Tariffs are harmful taxes on imports that increase costs for consumers and businesses. The associated financial impact and supply chain disruptions for a broad range of industries will be widespread and are simply too difficult to assess. The rapid imposition of the tariffs adds to the overall uncertainty, leaving close to no time for companies and officials to adjust. 

Farming for the future

Despite the country's 100,000 hectares of orchards, 90% of farmers in Bosnia and Herzegovina use outdated equipment, limiting productivity and sustainability. To address these challenges, CNH’s Sustainable Development Initiatives division partnered with equipment seller Case IH, importer Motoremont and local nonprofit Spektar to provide farmers with modern tractors with precision farming technology, carbon-filtered cabs and GPS support. In addition, the project included training sessions on sustainable chemical use and precision farming for farmers and university students. As a result, orchard owners' practices have become more efficient and environmentally conscious. Building on the success achieved in Bosnia and Herzegovina, CNH now aims to expand the initiative to Serbia. Learn more on Invested in Europe.
