Harnessing innovation to feed the future
Innovation is key to ensuring long-term food security and sustainability. At Enough Food for All 2025, held on Monday, 23 June, stakeholders from across the transatlantic agricultural community came together to explore how innovative technologies can build more resilient food systems. The discussion focused on the power of innovation to boost productivity, reduce environmental impact and support global food stability. Speakers also highlighted the importance of regulatory alignment, rural investment and the importance of including farmers in legislation that impacts them.
After Malte Lohan, CEO, AmCham EU welcomed attendees, Michelle Bekkering, Deputy Under Secretary, US Department of Agriculture, underscored the power of innovation to drive productivity, reduce environmental impact and support global food stability via a video message.
The panel discussion highlighted the need for a coherent EU policy framework to support the uptake of digital and biological solutions, from precision farming to gene editing. Speakers called for greater regulatory alignment, investment in rural infrastructure and improved stakeholder engagement. On the panel was Ali Abdi, Minister Counselor for Agricultural Affairs, US Mission to the European Union; Orsolya Frizon Somogyi, Acting Head of Unit, Research and Innovation, Outreach, Research and Geographical Indications, Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development, European Commission; Laila Pinheiro, Senior Executive, Public Affairs, Syngenta and Patrick Pagani, Deputy Secretary-General, Copa-Cogeca.
Afterwards, the fireside chat with Herbert Dorfmann, MEP (EPP, IT) and Dr Juli Jessen, Global CEO, Gowan Company, reinforced the shared commitment to harnessing innovation for a secure and sustainable food future. Julie Vermooten (MSD), Chair, Agriculture and Food Committee, AmCham EU, moderated the discussions. Thanks to our sponsors Gowan and MSD Animal Health for making the event a success.

Engaging with Commissioner Kadis
On Thursday, 5 June, AmCham EU met with Costas Kadis, Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans. The meeting focused on shared priorities for a resilient, sustainable aquaculture sector and opportunities for transatlantic collaboration. AmCham EU highlighted the importance of science-based solutions, including prevention, digitalisation and animal welfare to ensure sustainable seafood production in line with EU green objectives. Edouard Coppieters, Senior Policy Adviser; Malte Lohan, CEO and Julie Vermooten (MSD), Chair, Agriculture and Food Committee, AmCham EU represented the organisation.

Farming for the future
Despite the country's 100,000 hectares of orchards, 90% of farmers in Bosnia and Herzegovina use outdated equipment, limiting productivity and sustainability. To address these challenges, CNH’s Sustainable Development Initiatives division partnered with equipment seller Case IH, importer Motoremont and local nonprofit Spektar to provide farmers with modern tractors with precision farming technology, carbon-filtered cabs and GPS support. In addition, the project included training sessions on sustainable chemical use and precision farming for farmers and university students. As a result, orchard owners' practices have become more efficient and environmentally conscious. Building on the success achieved in Bosnia and Herzegovina, CNH now aims to expand the initiative to Serbia. Learn more on Invested in Europe.

Taking a bite out of food insecurity
LyondellBasell’s Advancing Good programme invested over €1 million across nine European countries in 2023 to address food insecurity, support health and promote youth education. More than funding, LyondellBasell’s local teams led volunteer initiatives tailored to community needs. Highlights include supporting food banks in the Netherlands, opening a low-cost grocery store in France and organising volunteer events on World Food Day. LyondellBasell colleagues spent over 7,500 hours helping 40,000 people across ten European countries throughout 2023. Moo’ving dairy forward, one cow at a time
Across the globe, Mars’ supply chains include over 200,000 cows and 1,000 farms to create its confectionary products. However, these treats don’t come without a cost: dairy is its second largest carbon footprint contributor of the Mars Snacking division, and raw ingredients account for over 70% of the organisation’s total greenhouse gas emissions. Those are the impacts Mars’ new sustainable dairy plan, Moo'ving Dairy Forward, seeks to address with its €43 million investment in dairy sustainability over the next three years. Learn more on Invested in Europe about the company's plan to cut emissions, starting on the farm with interventions that reduce enteric methane and increase sustainable feed production.
EU Deforestation Regulation: effective implementation not possible without deferred application
The European Commission has failed to provide the appropriate guidance required for companies to comply with the new legislation, despite repeated calls for clarification from industry. This uncertainty creates significant challenges for companies as they seek to invest in appropriate compliance measures. AmCham EU therefore calls on the Commission to urgently defer the date of application of the EUDR by one year. Alternatively, the Commission must at least consider a period of grace as of December 2024.
