Commission focus on energy efficiency in buildings welcome

Wednesday, January 21, 2015

The American Chamber of Commerce to the European Union (AmCham EU) applauds the emphasis on the buildings sector’s potential in the European Commission Communication on the Energy Efficiency Review. AmCham EU has been a long-term supporter of increasing the energy efficiency of Europe’s building stock and has urged for a long-term objective of reducing energy consumption by Europe’s buildings by 80% by 2050. Attention is also needed on making the current sectoral measures work at the national level.

AmCham EU agrees with the Commission that the implementation of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive needs more political focus and ambitious enforcement, and the Energy Performance Certification schemes have not been fully established. A well-functioning and trusted certification scheme would bring asset value to efficient buildings.

AmCham EU also agrees that Member States need to put more resources to effective market surveillance of high efficiency products in the EU markets. This would ensure a level playing field and encourage innovation in energy efficiency technology.

AmCham EU speaks for American business committed to Europe on trade investment and competitiveness issues. It aims to ensure a growth orientated business and investment climate in Europe. AmCham EU facilitates the resolution of transatlantic issues that impact business and play a role in creating better understanding of EU & US positions on business matters.
