To support the EU’s industrial competitiveness through the green and digital transitions, the European Commission’s proposal for the Critical Raw Materials (CRM) Act must be made workable for industry and respect Single Market principles. Avoiding unnecessary administrative and regulatory burdens, as well as abiding by Better Regulation Principles, are key to providing industry with the investment certainty it needs to secure a reliable supply of CRMs. The CRM Act should also respect industry’s competitiveness and economic realities by setting realistic targets and protecting confidential company information. Additionally, the Commission must clarify distinctions between critical and strategic raw materials. Finally, in partnership with industry groups, the EU should pursue comprehensive relationships with third countries, including the US, to meet its sustainability objectives.

Industry calls for stable and evidence-based implementation of the Single-Use Plastic Directive
Together with nine other associations, AmCham EU has signed a joint statement on the evaluation of the Single-Use Plastic Directive (SUPD), calling on EU institutions to avoid reopening the Directive. A revision at this stage would create uncertainty for operators and could also increase costs and deepen fragmentation across the Single Market. Several SUPD provisions are not yet in place. Data on implementation remain limited, making it too early to assess whether the Directive is meeting its objectives. The statement also underlines the need to address gaps in transposition and enforcement. It warns against overlaps with EU legislation such as the Ecodesign Regulation, the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation and the Circular Economy Act. CBAM extension: get implementation right before expanding scope
The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) will test whether the EU can address carbon leakage while keeping investment in Europe. As implementation of the CBAM advances, companies face costs and reporting duties under rules that are still taking shape. Preventing carbon leakage matters. However, the CBAM should work in practice before scope extension is considered. Moving too soon could place burdens on companies and disrupt value chains, with consequences for investment and trade.
