EU-UK agreement: a step forward for European security and cross-border business
The agreement struck between the EU and the UK is a step towards a closer relationship that bolsters Europe’s security and prosperity. The Security and Defence Partnership affirms the vital role of partnership in Europe’s defence and security. Addressing both current rearmament needs and long-term capability development will require sustained collaboration among all NATO Allies – in the EU, the UK and across the Atlantic.

This deepened cooperation on security should be matched by efforts to strengthen economic cooperation. The common understanding the EU and the UK reached on a range of trade issues, including sanitary and phytosanitary rules and mutual recognition of professional qualifications, is an essential first step in facilitating cross-border business and economic growth. The two sides should now use the newly agreed mechanisms for regular dialogue to address remaining obstacles to business mobility and resilience, such as discrepancies in rules of origin, data adequacy, artificial intelligence regulation and financial services rules.
