Trade and Technology Council: a significant step for the transatlantic partnership
On Wednesday, 29 September, the EU and the US formalised their cooperation on emerging trade and technology issues, following an inaugural Trade and Technology Council summit in Pittsburgh. The EU and US agreed on areas for common action and the Council’s attention must now turn to yielding swift results in order to strengthen the world’s largest trade and investment relationship.
Commenting on the inaugural meeting, Susan Danger, CEO, American Chamber of Commerce to the EU (AmCham EU) said: ‘The formal inauguration of the Trade and Technology Council is a significant step for the transatlantic partnership, following several years of escalating trade tensions. This mechanism will allow us to tackle new and emerging issues together.’ She went on to say: ‘Issues such as investment screening, WTO reform, supply-chain resilience and artificial intelligence are ones where there is tremendous scope for joint EU-US leadership, but also potential for renewed trade barriers. Both sides must use this new forum to promote dialogue and build trust, as well as anchoring emerging technologies in global standards that reflect our shared values.’
Engagement with industry and wider society will be critical to the success of the Trade and Technology Council. Regular exchanges with all strands of society, including the business community, academics, labour representatives and other constituencies will determine the capacity of the Council to deliver jobs, prosperity and smoother trade relations within the transatlantic area and beyond. This must form part of the workstreams of the Council’s working groups.

Statement on Supreme Court tariff ruling
The US Supreme Court has ruled today to halt tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). In response, the US Administration has indicated it will shortly enact a new 10% global tariff and initiate new tariff investigations under alternative instruments.
The American Chamber of Commerce to the EU (AmCham EU) continues to oppose broad-based tariffs as they disrupt supply chains and increase costs for businesses and consumers. We echo the US Chamber of Commerce’s call for the US Administration to use this ruling as an opportunity to reset its overall tariff policy.
There is now significant uncertainty for businesses that depend on a stable and predictable trade policy environment. Further guidance from authorities is required for companies to understand how the latest developments will impact their operations.
The EU-US trade and investment relationship is the most important economic partnership in the world. AmCham EU looks to the EU and the US to continue working closely together in support of their shared growth and security.

AmCham EU meets with US Assistant Secretary of State for Economic, Energy and Business Affairs
On Tuesday, 17 February, AmCham EU met with Caleb Orr, US Assistant Secretary of State for Economic, Energy and Business Affairs, to exchange views on transatlantic economic priorities. Malte Lohan, CEO, opened the discussion by highlighting the importance of a strong and predictable business environment for US companies operating in the EU. The exchange focused on regulatory and investment conditions affecting international business, as well as the broader EU-US trade relationship and the value of continued economic cooperation. Participants also discussed cooperation on critical mineral supply chains, underlining the importance of coordinated transatlantic efforts to strengthen economic security, resilience and competitiveness.

Discussing transatlantic trade with US Trade Representative Bryant Trick
On Monday, 9 February, AmCham EU met with Bryant Trick, Assistant United States Trade Representative, Europe and the Middle East. Malte Lohan, CEO and Liam Benham, Chair, opened the meeting by setting the context for the discussion and highlighting the need for transatlantic engagement at a challenging time. As efforts continue to implement the EU–US framework agreement and move forward in a constructive manner, the exchange provided an important opportunity for open dialogue.
