On Tuesday, 26 March, we dove into what intellectual property (IP) developments we can expect following the upcoming elections in Europe and the US. During a panel discussion, attendees heard why clear IP protection rights are needed to foster innovation and competitiveness. Afterwards, Antonios Nestoras, Deputy Executive Director, European Liberal Forum shared his views on why strong ties with likeminded partners are needed more than ever before. During both sections, collaboration was the clear answer in protecting intellectual property rights and advancing global innovation. 

The future of the Trade and Technology Council

The Trade and Technology Council (TTC) is a unique forum for the EU and the US to tackle emerging issues arising from the transformation of our economies and geopolitical shifts. Since its creation, the TTC has achieved several successes that have strengthened transatlantic cooperation. However, more should be done to amplify its impact. Policymakers have an opportunity to build a TTC fit for the future by refining its objectives, simplifying workstreams and increasing transparency and stakeholder engagement. AmCham EU signs the Antwerp Declaration, joining in the call for a more competitive EU

Businesses need clarity, predictability and confidence in Europe and its industrial policy. That’s why we have signed the Antwerp Declaration for a European Industrial Deal to lend our voice to the chorus calling for a more competitive and resilient EU. Aligning with our recently launched Agenda for Action, the declaration calls for strengthening the Single Market, a focus on elevating competitiveness as a strategic priority in European industrial policy and to create incentives for business to invest in low carbon technologies. Advancing water management with Water Europe

Joining Water Europe for an interview, Susan Danger, CEO, AmCham EU shared her thoughts on the importance of water management and why industry needs a sustainable water strategy. Water scarcity is a major threat to society at large, and the EU should prioritise water issues. Ahead of the upcoming 2024-2029 legislative cycle, Ms Danger recommends implementing a Water Resilience Initiative into the agenda. Sharpening Europe’s competitive edge with our Executive Council

Increasing Europe’s competitiveness must be on top of the agenda. That was the key message AmCham EU's Executive Council emphasised during its spring plenary on Monday, 18 and Tuesday, 19 March. The group of senior executives underlined why the attractiveness of Europe needs to be a top priority and how a heavy regulatory burden is having a negative impact on driving investment. Throughout the visit, the group linked back to the messages found in our Agenda for Action and highlighted the need to address Europe’s competitiveness in the next legislative term. Connecting with the AmChams at the Brussels Briefing

From Monday March, 18 to Wednesday, 20 March 2024 39 representatives from 22 AmChams in Europe were in town for our Brussels Briefing. The theme of the first day was the upcoming EU elections, with Jaume Duch Guillot, Director-General for Communication, European Parliament, holding a session of how to engage EU citizens within Member States. The group also had the chance to get insights into a range of policy topics as well as hear from Marisa Lago, US Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade on transatlantic trade relations. The group also participated in our Transatlantic Reception in the European Parliament and the Transatlantic Conference 2024

This year’s Transatlantic Conference, ‘The transatlantic effect: shaping the global agenda’ put the focus on how Europe and the US can shape global values, set international standards and drive change. The conference took place on Tuesday, 19 March 2024 and featured a range of industry and institution speakers from both sides of the Atlantic. As an opening video, Gina Raimondo, US Secretary of Commerce, underlined the importance of keeping the transatlantic dialogue open through forums like the Trade and Technology Council (TTC). Stephen Boyle, Global Chief Trust Officer, Workday, then expanded on why businesses need to be transparent and trustworthy, especially with rapid advancements in technology.  Want to see for yourself? Launch of The Transatlantic Economy 2024

The Transatlantic Economy 2024 presents the most up-to-date facts and figures about the economic relationship between Europe and the US. The research was conducted independently by Daniel Hamilton and Joseph Quinlan at the Foreign Policy Institute, School of Advanced International Studies, Johns Hopkins University and the Transatlantic Leadership Network. The 21st edition of the report features new insights into international support for Ukraine and sanctions against Russia, major shifts in the transatlantic energy economy, the reconfiguration of global supply chains with derisking strategies at play, relations with China as well as the green and digital transitions. The study also includes dedicated profiles for more than 30 European countries and all US states.

The role of cloud services in achieving the EU’s Digital Decade targets

The informal Member State Cloud Cooperation Group (MSCCG), established under the European Alliance for Industrial Data, Edge and Cloud, is developing guidelines on public procurement of cloud computing services (Guidelines). Unfortunately, the work of this group has been characterised with a lack of transparency and industry engagement. To ensure that the Guidelines are realistic and implementable, we encourage authorities to engage in open dialogues with cloud providers before they are finalised. Learn how the European Commission can establish a resilient public procurement framework that accounts for issues on security, sovereignty, sustainability and skills, among others.

Advocating for Europe at the EPP Congress

From Wednesday, 6 March to Thursday, 7 March, AmCham EU attended the European People's Party’s (EPP) Congress in Bucharest, Romania. While there, we continued to share and discuss the positions found in our Agenda for Action 2024-2029 which was launched earlier this year in front of some of the main political groups of the European Parliament. Our message to Europe’s leaders remained clear: there is much that needs to be done to increase the attractiveness of Europe, but with decisive action, the EU can reset the agenda and strengthen its competitiveness in the global economy. 

Engaging with former Speaker John Boehner

On Friday, 8 March 2024, AmCham EU met with John Boehner, former Speaker of the United States House of Representatives and Senior Strategic Advisor Squire Patton Boggs. Also in attendance was Paul Jones, former US Ambassador to Poland, Pakistan and Malaysia and Matthew Kirk, former UK Ambassador to Finland. The meeting, co-organised with Squire Patton Boggs, focused on the upcoming US elections and ways to advance the transatlantic partnership. In the context of EU-US cooperation, the conversation centred on the reconstruction of Ukraine and how strong transatlantic ties will speed up recovery in the region.

EU-Chile Agreement: Parliament vote signals EU commitment to renew partnership with Latin American countries

The approval by the European Parliament of the EU-Chile Advanced Framework Agreement and its Interim Trade Agreement (ITA) is the latest success of EU trade policy in this mandate, showing the EU’s strong commitment to open trade and to stronger cooperation with Latin America. This deal will also allow the EU and Chile to adjust their trade relationship to common challenges (eg, climate change and geopolitical tensions) and deepen bilateral trade to access new growth opportunities.

Engaging with the Hungarian Presidency

From Tuesday, 20 to Friday, 23 February 2024, our CEO and a delegation of senior members of AmCham EU visited Budapest ahead of the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union. This is part of AmCham EU’s longstanding programme to engage with every Presidency given the important role they play as an honest broker in the Council. Members of the delegation shared the priorities of the American business community, in particular, the need to strengthen the competitiveness of Europe.
