Moo’ving dairy forward, one cow at a time

Across the globe, Mars’ supply chains include over 200,000 cows and 1,000 farms to create its confectionary products. However, these treats don’t come without a cost: dairy is its second largest carbon footprint contributor of the Mars Snacking division, and raw ingredients account for over 70% of the organisation’s total greenhouse gas emissions. Those are the impacts Mars’ new sustainable dairy plan, Moo'ving Dairy Forward, seeks to address with its €43 million investment in dairy sustainability over the next three years. Learn more on Invested in Europe about the company's plan to cut emissions, starting on the farm with interventions that reduce enteric methane and increase sustainable feed production.

Speakers also highlighted the importance of regulatory alignment, rural investment and the importance of including farmers in legislation that impacts them.

After Malte Lohan, CEO, AmCham EU welcomed attendees, Michelle Bekkering, Deputy Under Secretary, US Department of Agriculture, underscored the power of innovation to drive productivity, reduce environmental impact and support global food stability via a video message.

The panel discussion highlighted the need for a coherent EU policy framework to support the uptake of digital and biological solutions, from precision farming to gene editing. Speakers called for greater regulatory alignment, investment in rural infrastructure and improved stakeholder engagement. On the panel was Ali Abdi, Minister Counselor for Agricultural Affairs, US Mission to the European Union; Orsolya Frizon Somogyi, Acting Head of Unit, Research and Innovation, Outreach, Research and Geographical Indications, Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development, European Commission; Laila Pinheiro, Senior Executive, Public Affairs, Syngenta and Patrick Pagani, Deputy Secretary-General, Copa-Cogeca.

Farming for the future

Despite the country's 100,000 hectares of orchards, 90% of farmers in Bosnia and Herzegovina use outdated equipment, limiting productivity and sustainability. To address these challenges, CNH’s Sustainable Development Initiatives division partnered with equipment seller Case IH, importer Motoremont and local nonprofit Spektar to provide farmers with modern tractors with precision farming technology, carbon-filtered cabs and GPS support. In addition, the project included training sessions on sustainable chemical use and precision farming for farmers and university students. As a result, orchard owners' practices have become more efficient and environmentally conscious. Building on the success achieved in Bosnia and Herzegovina, CNH now aims to expand the initiative to Serbia. Learn more on Invested in Europe.
