'What is the engine of the European economy?'. Exports are, according to a new trade study commissioned by AmCham EU. The study was launched on Wednesday, 15 December at an event which featured the author Patrice Muller, Senior Managing Partner, LE Europe who presented the key findings. His presentation was followed by a panel discussion which touched upon the key milestones for trade in 2021 and a fireside chat with Ambassador João Aguiar Machado, Permanent Representative of the EU to the WTO.

The panel moderated by Thibaut L’Ortye, Director of Public Affairs, AmCham EU featured: 

  • Iana Dreyer, Founder, Borderlex 
  • Cristina Falcone, Vice-President, Public Affairs, UPS Europe 
  • Julia Friedlander, C. Boyden Gray Senior Fellow and Director, Economic Statecraft Initiative, GeoEconomics Center, Atlantic Council 

The speakers focused on the disruption experienced in 2021 by global supply chains, the impact that the carbon border adjustment mechanism will have on the EU’s trade and the need for a WTO reform. 

Following the panel, the launch concluded with a fireside conversation with Ambassador João Aguiar Machado, Permanent Representative of the EU to the WTO and Susan Danger, CEO, AmCham EU. The conversation highlighted the progress recently made at the WTO on the plurilateral agreement on trade in services.
