Ambassador Verveer urges closer transatlantic cooperation Date: 31 January 2012
At a meeting with AmCham EU members on Friday 27 January 2012, Ambassador Philip Verveer, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State and US Coordinator for International Communications and Information Policy urged closer cooperation between the US and EU on several key policies, namely Data Protection, Cloud Computing and on Internet Governance.
On Data Protection Verveer said that all stakeholders must be part of the discussion and that it was crucial for the EU and US to strike the right balance between the privacy of individuals and the need for innovation and growth. Cloud computing is another area Verveer seeked closer coordination across the Atlantic and in particular looking at common standards.
Finally, Verveer focused on Internet Governance and the upcoming World Conference on International Telecommunications. Telling members the stakes are high he advocated for governments and business to work together in ensuring we continue to have an open Internet for all citizens of the world. The meeting ended with a question and answer session.
