European Commission releases proposals for a regulation and directive on data protection Date: 25 January 2012 AmCham EU welcomes the Commission’s comprehensive reform of data protection rules and applauds its efforts to create one law applicable to all Member States. AmCham EU believes that privacy laws need to be globally consistent and clear. To facilitate growth and innovation in the EU (and globally), data protection rules should be flexible and simple enough to encourage the development and take up of innovative new services.
It is essential to strike the right balance between data protection and innovation in technology and business models. The development of shared solutions through EU-US bilateral meetings, and in multi-lateral organisations, is a pragmatic path towards resolving the issues at a stake today. These solutions could then be deployed and adopted in other key markets.
AmCham EU will be reviewing the recommendations in depth and looks forward to working with the Commission to create a data privacy regulatory framework in Europe that serves the needs of its citizens, encourages the development of growth and innovation and clearly lays out the rules of engagement.
